Have you ever had a sense that you are not your body? You may well have, but not known that was going on. A couple of weeks ago I got up as usual in the morning, did my teeth, got dressed and then stood in front of the bathroom mirror ready to do my hair and make up.
Often when we look in the mirror we evaluate with a negative, critical perspective: How tired do I look? How many wrinkles do I have? Could my hair benefit from washing? Often it is such a habit we do daily that we don't even notice or question it. On this recent occasion when I looked in the mirror not only did I notice none of the usual mental critical chatter going on, but I had a strong sense that who I was looking at in the mirror, wasn't a true interpretation of me.
I've had this experience before and got super curious about the person in the mirror. I always thought it was because what I was seeing was literally a mirror reflection and not a true representation of 'me'. A reversal via the mirror of what I really look like. This time I realised that it had nothing to do with the mirror's representation of 'me' but two things:
Firstly, I felt totally separate to what I was seeing in the mirror. It was as if I was observing the 'me'. I recognised that who is 'me' is not my face, nor my body. We just have to remind ourselves that every cell in our body is completely replaced every 7 years so we are not the physical we look at in the mirror. My mind was incredibly quiet throughout the experience and I was very present.
Secondly, everything we 'see' comes to us through thought and I recognised this was going on in the moment. It is not possible to see anything in our surroundings in its pure form as everything we see is experienced through thought. So every person you have in your life you experience through thought, which is why we experience people so differently from one day to the next. This includes our experience of ourselves and who we believe ourselves to be. It's quite literally all made up.
If you want to experience the 'real you' behind the busy thoughts and get in touch with effortless living, then join me for a day's workshop in October to experience the magic for yourself:
