So it’s Thursday morning and my blog goes out today. On some occasions I write my blog as late as the actual day it goes out, but never before have I not known what I’m going to write about in advance. But then I’m a lot more trusting of life these days and knowing things are going to work out and I’m feeling extra generous today with Christmas coming up so make sure you read to the end.
My life in the last 12 years has been very much one of learning about natural nutrition, anatomy and physiology and in more recent years it has veered more into the world of personal development. There are many people I greatly admire that work within this field. Why has personal development become such a strong interest? Nutrition has its strengths when it comes to building great health but there is mind health to consider too.
My diet is the best it’s been my whole life and when I say “best”, I mean best suited to me and my current needs. I could spend years more tweaking and changing it, and I will, because our nutritional needs are constantly changing. What is really making a difference to my life now, in a huge way, is having a better understanding of how my perceived experience of life affects my health. It’s not just about being a glass half full as opposed to a glass half empty person, it’s about seeing that our bodies’ health are a reflection of how we experience our environment and vice versa.
The problem I have come to discover with most personal development is that it is usually centred on using tools and techniques. I’ve been a huge fan of Louise Hay in recent years and it was in her workshop a few years ago that first had me looking at the mind: body link when it comes to health in a new way. Louise Hay’s use of affirmations are highly effective, and have worked wonders for me, and for my children too when for example they they’ve had a difficult time with other children at school, or have been feeling fearful about activities at school, like swimming. But like all tools and techniques they work for a limited time and then we get back to our usual routine and after a couple of weeks we fall back into old ways and habits.
If you’ve ever been to a workshop like Louise Hay’s or Tony Robbin’s you too I would imagine, like me, come away feeling inspired and motivated to make changes after a few days of being immersed in which ever form of tools and techniques they favour, and then return back into ‘normal’ day to day life feeling great for a few days. Then before you know it, a few weeks have gone by, and life returns pretty much back to how it was.
What all these personal develop workshops, seminars, webinars and books are telling you is that the answer is out there, and that you, as you, need fixing and are not okay already. What if I were to tell you that that is simply not true? All that you need is already within you and just needs some gentle uncovering. It’s like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, she went on a journey looking for something when she was at home the whole time.
For me it’s all been about raising awareness when it comes to our minds and our bodies. Of course good nutrition will always be close to my heart and something I feel very passionate about for attaining good health, but this is only part of the picture. Eating a salad whilst feeling sad and lonely is a poorer choice for our health than eating a burger and fries surrounded by laughter and joy shared with friends and family.
There are many health issues that sometimes share common thinking and behaviourial patterns and uncovering the scripts that we follow in life (often inherited), can be key to achieving great health. Looking at the language of the body is key, for example, backache can go hand in hand with a feeling of “not being supported” or of being “let down”. Stress, worry and anxiety all have a very good way of finding an expression through the body. Stiff joints can reflect that you’re not sharing your deeper feelings and you have a great feeling of lack of freedom. Bronchitis can be a refection of the difficulty of communication between your inside and outside world. Headaches can be a sign of dehydration, hormonal problems or dietary factors, but it can also be a sign of spending too much time in your head. Similarly, migraines can be an imploding of emotions, such as anger and irritation as well as an allergy to cheese, chocolate and red wine. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (of which I have personal experience) can be a sign of loss of spirit for life with no sense of direction or purpose.

If you could push a button and wake up tomorrow in the best of health what would that really mean to you?
Most people “lie” to themselves about the state of health their body is in with an increasing number of aches, niggles, digestive and sleep problems (to name but a few), as the years go by. And remember great health is not just the absence of illness.
