My last blog was your all time favourite recipe. This time it is the most popular health article since my blog began.
I am not your typical reserved Brit and am prepared to give pretty much anything a go when it comes to improving my health, if I can see it makes sense. I’ve even drunk my own pee for goodness sake, and yes it was miraculous at healing an adrenal problem, but that’s a whole other story for another time.
Enemas came in to my life around 11 years ago when a nutritional therapist recommended I do one to clear and detox. I have to say I didn’t hesitate too long before trying it and have never looked back. I am sure though initially, like me, if you haven’t tried an enema before the questions that whirr around your head at the thought may include, will I accidentally poo myself, either whilst I am doing it or at a later point in the day when I’m out and about? Will I get to the toilet in time to release the water? Will it hurt inserting a tube into my bottom? How far up does it need to go? Am I making myself prone to infection by doing it? Is it going to damage my bowel flora? If I go to the toilet every day surely I don’t need to do an enema? Its’ not natural is it? Let’s face it us Brits are generally very coy about the whole bottom, bowel movement thing unless its in a Carry On film. Yet our European counter-parts are familiar with the practice of enemas and find nothing unusual or strange about it.
In answer to the question, ‘it’s not very natural is it?’ Have you looked into people’s shopping trolleys lately? The last 50 years has seen the most dramatic change in what we consider food than since Adam plucked his first apple off the tree in the Garden of Eden. Nowadays processed, chemical ladened, additive filled, artificially flavoured, coloured and sweetened ‘foods’ that our bodies where never meant to deal with, are very prevalent in the average person’s daily digestion process. I say ‘process’ as digestion of these types of food are the least of the challenge, actually getting any nutrients from them or expelling them are the greatest obstacle. Enemas are excellent for constipation and getting the bowels moving again.
Although I have had a pretty massive life change in terms of my diet over the last 12 years, with considerable improvements to my all round level of health, I am not naïve enough to think that my body is not still holding onto some of my less than healthy food choices from times past. I am still an on-going project, a work in progress. It has also been an enlightening journey watching how my body and health have changed over these years and one of the key tools in these changes has most definitely been the regular use of enemas.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and although I am a big believer in not having regrets, I do wish someone had educated me about the use of enemas in my teens. I wouldn’t say I suffered terribly from spots then, but those years of heightened vanity, sensitivity and self-awareness were hard enough with anything less than perfect skin. I cringe now when I think back to the awful prescriptions from my Doctor or over the counter products I tried in a ‘vain’ attempt to control my unruly skin. Now of course I understand that beautiful skin starts not on the outside but on the inside. Anyone with a toxic colon impacted with years of undigested faeces is not going to have glowing skin. I limit my exposure to advertising these days and their sometimes harmful messages, but a recent advert around spot cream and face wash clearly targeted at the vulnerable teenage market made me sad and annoyed. If only teenagers were educated that food and the health of the digestive system does affect skin condition, despite what some doctors may say.
If I do ever suffer from a skin breakout now, which is rare but certainly not a given in your 40’s, I just reach for my enema bag and it is gone or the inflammation is certainly vastly reduced within 24 hours. You see our skin is used as an additional elimination route when our liver and bowels have reached the limit on what they can cope with. Performing an enema releases both the liver and the bowels of their toxic loads. It can be the same case in some cases of eczema, rosacea, psoriasis and other skin complaints.
I similarly reach for my enema kit if I feel cold or flu symptoms coming on or any other illness, including respiratory problems like bronchitis, (which thankfully is a problem I also no longer suffer from). Any illness is a build up of toxic load within the body and as the liver is the master detoxer of the body anything you can do to support and help the liver is going to help shift illness at a much faster rate. This is why enemas are such a big component in healing chronic illnesses should a patient choose to take a holistic approach rather than a medical approach. The Gerson Therapy approach is used to treat cancer, diabetes and other chronic illnesses and uses coffee enemas as a large part of treatment with great success.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine the liver is the organ associated with spring-time and so this time of year can be a big challenge for people with livers that are struggling. This can show up through headaches, nausea, tummy problems and emotionally, signs can be an increased need for control, irritability and anger. You’ll spot someone with a balanced liver as their ability to strategically plan will make you envious. They are very organised calm people.
Doing enemas once a week as a maintenance program truly makes such a difference to my quality of life. It is such an easy, low cost and effective health maintenance tool that I would not be without. It is a rare day that I cannot clear the onset of a cold or sniffles with a well-timed enema. If I have a busy week and fail to find the time to do an enema I feel my energy levels drop and I have a certain heaviness about me and I can also start to get irritable and short-tempered. The enema is literally transformational, I feel clearer physically, mentally and emotionally.
Enemas are also a great way of supporting any healthy dietary changes and prevention of falling back into food cravings and addictive eating patterns, which behaviours are very much seated in the liver and what state it is in. This is why so many people when doing a detox end up feeling worse as the shift in toxicity is not easily dealt with by an already struggling body. When toxicity is released from various parts of the body it can shift to other vulnerable organs if routes of elimination are not opened and the toxicity is not eliminated.
For those that want to make an even greater impact on their colon health, then colonics are the next step. Unlike enemas these are not done at home but by a colon hydrotherapist. Though both use water to cleanse, the colonic has the potential to clear the whole of the colon with circulating warm water, whereas enemas only deal with the lower part of the colon. I would warn you though it is recommended to follow a colonic with an enema a couple of days later, or it could leave you feeling quite unwell. The colon is a reflex organ and so the colonic stimulates it to continue releasing toxins long after the colonic is finished. Following the colonic with an enema 2 to 3 days later will help release even more toxicity and help with any toxic fallout and reduce the risk of post-colonic nausea and headaches.
