I have been exploring what has been described as the most important health discovery this century, ‘Earthing’. It has become such a major part of my life in the last year and another tool in my toolkit of health techniques that I just had to share it with you, and best of all it doesn’t have to cost a thing.
We live in an age where we have become so out of touch with our natural environment. For those of us that have busy lives, living in cities with high levels of EMF pollution (Electromagnetic fields, invisible electrical and magnetic forces) that surround the space we live in, it is easy to lose touch with what is a natural and healthy habitat. We are all affected to a greater or lesser extent by EMF’s, and I know you are or you wouldn’t be reading this on your computer screen or your mobile! Our environment is full of EMF’s from computers, mobile phones and masts, radio and TV broadcasts, WiFi (wireless networks), Bluetooth, power lines, domestic wiring, to household electrical appliances. All these tiny little voltages are absorbed by our bodies and affect our whole immune system.
The Council of European Parliamentary Assembly is currently trying to ban Wifi and mobile phone usage in all schools Europe-wide, due to the massive health implications of EMF’s on children’s developing bodies.
Few people are aware that the ground offers a limitless amount of free electrons that we are able to absorb straight into our bodies by going barefoot. Modern manmade shoes create a barrier to the electrons and insulate us from the earth. Free electrons are absolutely vital for the body to deal with damaging free radicals and to stay healthy and help combat the damage of EMF’s. Free radicals are responsible for pretty much all inflammation in the body and with any disease, inflammation must be present. Physical disconnection to our natural surroundings and the earth can contribute to all sorts of health problems including poor sleep patterns, fatigue, stress and mood swings.
David Wolfe, considered by his peers to be one of, if not the world’s leading expert on nutrition, has described shoes as being one of the most damaging inventions to health, ever. He is adamant that the habit of wearing shoes is the one biggest contributor to inflammation and auto-immune disease, the 2 biggest being heart disease and cancer. We have forgotten the most natural state of all - going barefoot.
Best of all these health-giving electrons are free and available to us all if we are in direct contact with the earth. I can personally vouch for how effective reconnecting with the earth can be. I drink alcohol less and less these days and indulge heavily very rarely. The last time I did and woke up with a groggy head. I simply wrapped up warm but left my feet bare and went and sat on the bench outside in the garden with my feet on the grass. Within seconds my whole body felt different, uplifted even and my head cleared of that horrible heavy feeling you get after a night of alcohol. After 20 minutes I was feeling great! My husband also reconnects barefoot with the earth when he gets home if he’s had a particularly stressful day. I’m a bit sneaky with the kids too and when the weather is conducive, I get the kids to help me hang the washing out first thing in the morning (barefoot of course). There is no better way for them to start the day, absorbing all those health-giving electrons.
Grass with dew on it or paddling on a sandy beach are ideal as the water helps the conductivity of the electrons. So get down to the beach (if like me you are lucky enough to be near one), go out in the garden or find a park or other grassy area and kick those shoes off and get those tootsies in contact with the earth as we were naturally meant to. You always thought you felt great after a beach holiday because of the sun and sangria? Well that may be, but more likely the biggest contributor to that great health feeling is the contact you have had with the earth’s electrons from the beach and the sea.
Earthing our bodies is virtually impossible indoors and when it’s cold and wet outside the incentive to go barefoot just isn’t always there and it is not always practical to do so in our busy lives. Well you’ll be pleased to hear that there is another way. Amazing new technologies now allow us to connect to the earth in an easy and practical way. My personal favourite is the Earthing sheet. This a fitted bed sheet like a normal bed sheet but with lots of tiny electrical wires running through it and a wire you plug into the wall mains socket. (You will need to check your socket is properly earthed for it to work. My house is a 100+ years old and all our bedroom sockets are earthed for our sheets). Just to warn you, the first couple of nights sleeping on the sheet my husband and I had a very weird night’s sleep with lots of very strange dreams, but this effect passed quickly.
Best of all I know that when my children are sleeping they are also naturally protected by the sheet from all surrounding EMF waves. With the little darlings sleeping for 12 hours a night it is a fantastic opportunity to get their bodies completely earthed and taking in as many electrons as their little bodies can handle! It is unlikely that any of us would ever be able to get the daily equivalent of 12 hours barefoot on the earth.
Another great Earthing product is the Earthing mat which you can place under your computer so that your arms are in contact with it whilst you are working or simply place it under your feet (bare of course).
Dramatic improvements and in some cases complete cures from cases such as chronic back pain and arthritis have been documented in the book of the same name ‘Earthing’. A really great read if you want to find out how the earthing products were developed and tested and if you want to hear about the dramatic stories of healing as a result of earthing technology. Even one of the Tour De France teams used this technology to recover quickly at night ready to race again the following day.
