I was driving and a stone flew up and cracked the windscreen. The crack was too bad for a quick fill repair and so the car needed a whole new windscreen.
Soon after it was replaced, we had a sunny day and my sunglasses got their first outing of the year. I was driving back from seeing a friend, sitting at a set of traffic lights, thinking about how much better my vision could be.
The guy who replaced the windscreen had left smears all over the inside that were only visible when the sun was shining, and my glasses were a bit dusty and in a need of a good clean too.
Then I started to smile as I saw the metaphor of how we live our life in what I was thinking about.
We go through life thinking that what we are ‘seeing’ is a true representation of what we are actually looking at, unaware of the smears and dust. Learning what creates our psychological experience can make all the difference in understanding how we perceive life.
Often, but unknown to us (and I forget this from time to time too) we are unaware that what we are ‘seeing’ is actually experienced through thought. Sure, we take in the information through the eyes, but how we interpret that is actually through thought.
Along the journey of life we pick up a whole load of concepts and beliefs that has us ‘see’ things in a blurred or not very clear way. EXCEPT, (this is the important bit) we’re not aware of the ‘smears’ or the ‘dust’; so we don’t know that what we’re seeing isn’t real.
Driving with good vision, without scratches, dust and smears getting in the way helps us to navigate the roads a lot better. Just as in life, that when we are able to eliminate the ‘smears of our thinking’ that we have picked up along the way that skew what we are interpreting from our world, we are better able to navigate through life far more effectively and contentedly.
If you are wanting to clear the 'smears of your thinking' to lead a more peaceful, connected and loving life then join me for a truly transformational weekend:
