Good poetry can be magical. It can inspire us to see and feel things beyond the words. A couple of years ago a dear friend of mine bought me a book of poetry by Sufi master Hafiz . On opening it I flicked through the pages and came to this poem. It has been my favourite poem ever since and moves me every time I read it.Read More
Our modern world is filled with faster and more convenient products. From internet surfing on the move on the latest Smart phone, to the ping of the microwave on your 5-minute ready meal. There is one material that plays a very large part in our fast living, disposable lifestyle and that is plastic.Read More
Everywhere I look these days I see people using antibacterial soap. No longer are they just in hospitals and doctor’s surgeries, but mums with their kids, schools and restaurants, and even on the beauty counters in department stores. I'm guessing that as we enter flu season the UK their prevalence is going to grow even more.
Of course minimising exposure and the spread of germs seems like a wise idea, but what if in the process we are inadvertently making our own immune systems weaker and less able to fight viruses and bacteria?
The products now available to make your house smell 'fresh' have gone crazy in the last few years. There's everything from fragranced sprays, reed diffusers, candles, pot pourri, gels, automatic battery operated sprays and plug ins.
Just like all the other seemingly innocuous household products I've written about this week, there can be a serious cost to our health by choosing to have them in our homes.
Since having kids I've wanted to do household tasks as naturally as possible, this came partly through instinct and partly because I couldn't stomach strong chemical perfume smells when I was pregnant and breast feeding.
I do love the natural smell of freshly laundered sheets and clothes, but I still have a dislike for strong smelling laundry that has been cleaned with heavily perfumed chemicals. That coupled with wanting to keep things simple has meant I never ventured down the road of fabric softeners to make my laundry feel soft and smell nice.
When I looked in to ways to freshen up and whiten old pillows and bedding some years ago I was shocked to come across research on how harmful to our health fabric softeners can be...
Listerine, one of the big brands that sells mouthwashes, was established over 140 years ago and positioned its mouthwash as an antiseptic for post surgery infection reduction, but...
...was also used as an antiseptic floor cleaner, (gulp).
Energy saving light bulbs come in 2 forms: Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), both of which are well known for saving money. In fact energy efficiency increases by 90% to 95% compared to traditional incandescent bulbs.
But there is a huge part of the puzzle we’ve not been told.
I'm noticing so many people struggling in their marriages right now. The most common problems I hear are..
- What do I do & how do I handle it when my partner changes for the worse… or refuses to change for the better?
- Can a relationship last forever – even when neither partner is perfect – and how can you shift your mind-set to make all your relationships seem totally effortless?
- What is the best way to communicate, so that you’re not killing the relationship?
- How do I know for absolute certain whether I should stay in a difficult relationship or just leave. When do I pull the plug and finally call it quits?

I went to a great party yesterday with my family.
As the co-hosts are in a band, there was a very musical theme to the party. It started with a sing-along to some classics, then a pop quiz and then karaoke into the late evening.
It turns out my 10 years old son is a natural performer on the karaoke and although some of his choices were not to everyone’s taste, we had his rendition of Ylvis’s “What Does The Fox Say?”, Cameo’s “Word Up”, Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” and plenty of fast rapping numbers, it really made me aware of his innate mental health.
